In this series, we spotlight our skilled tech team by asking about their education, why they chose DNB, and why others should too.
Our goal is to inspire more applications for tech subjects before the higher education deadline on April 15th. We also aim to give a glimpse into the tech work life at DNB.
This article introduces you to Thanh Thao Thi Tran, a Software Engineer in our in-house talent program, Greenhouse. Get to know her better:
Q: Name, age?
A: Thao Tran, 25.
Q: Education?
A: University of Oslo, Bachelor & Master of Programming and System Architecture, 2017–2022.
Q: Why did you choose this study?
A: It was really somewhat unexpected; my original aim was to study and eventually become an economist, until an impulse struck and I switched 180 degrees. Luckily for me, there are numerous opportunities in the technology field, which has spellbound me from the beginning!
Q: Why did you apply for a job at DNB?
A: I was introduced to the career opportunities at DNB through the company days at the university. As a student then, it seemed a bit far-fetched to work in Norway's largest bank as a developer, but here I am! As a student, you have to decide between the options of being a consultant or working for an in-house firm, which feels like a life-changing decision. Thankfully, DNB makes it quite simple to get both, especially in the Greenhouse graduate program where you change teams every year, which made the choice relatively easy for me.
In addition, I wanted to study economics until the impulse took me, so being able to be on the technological side of a large financial institution and see how optimal solutions are put into implementation and practice, but also see how its infrastructure is built up, is, I think, very exciting!
Q: What is the most exciting thing you have worked on at DNB?
A: Being able to contribute to the creation of tomorrow's pension and insurance solutions for businesses looking to register their employees is exciting, as pensions and insurance are procedures that affect all of us at some point in our lives. I also have little to no prior knowledge of insurance or pensions, so this is a perfect chance for me to finally learn a little bit about those topics!
Q: Why should technologists apply for a job at DNB?
A: DNB offers so many more possibilities than just everyday banking! The tech stack is enormous; there are numerous platforms and solutions to pick from and work with. In addition, working with talented and inspiring coworkers adds an extra spark to everyday activities! An event that appeals to me, especially as a woman, is the Codelicious offer. This is a series of recurring code nights specifically for women. It makes it easier for me to locate a forum where I can network with other women across the bank, learn from others, and be inspired! Last but not least, there is so much fun and social happening within the team you are on, but also for DNB as a whole.
Q: What should one do to end up in the job you have?
A: First and foremost, take the opportunity to apply! This particularly applies to students and recent graduates. It is very easy to be critical of yourself and feel that you may not meet all the formal requirements, but as long as you have applied, you have at least done what you can do! If you're curious and think the things tech can contribute to everyday life are cool, then you're already well on your way!
Norway needs more technologists!
Choose a tech subject by April 15th.
